Kinky not Nappy

Hey guys, I’m back with another personal post from the heart. A lot of discussions that come up with me and some of my girl pals is about our own natural hair journeys.  I’ve come so far, and I can honestly say I am still learning about my hair type and what actually feeds and keeps it healthy. I’ve decided to be more open with my journey and share what I’ve been using and what works best for my hair!

I’ve been natural since 2011, and since then I’ve learned one thing people don’t think my curls matter. Every time I get on any social media platform all I see are loose curls, or as we call it type 3 hair. Now I have nothing against them, but I would love to see more representation of my hair type. And instead of complaining about it or making a fuss I decided to speak my own mind and represent US myself. The women people tease because we have coarse hair, thick hair, or instead of my curls hanging they fluff out. Yes my hair curls are more of a coil yes if they are twisted too long they might dread (lol) but because I don’t have silky smooth hair that doesn’t make my CROWN any less beautiful.

If you believe in the whole hair type thing, my hair would be a 4C texture. But really it’s all different textures as I’m sure everyone else’s is. I think my hair is healthier than before because I finally realized that my hair doesn’t have to be silky smooth or fine to be healthy. Once I understood that and fell in love with my hair that’s when I stopped trying to make my hair into something it is not.

I’m now going to share some of my hairs’ versatility. This is only the beginning of my posts about my hair. I’m excited to embark on this journey with you all, and I can’t wait to hear from each one of you.

Big Chop 2011: The big chop for me wasn’t that big because I cut all of my hair into a Mohawk my sophomore year, so it wasn’t that hard the hard part for me was not being made fun of for embracing my “nappy hair.”

Circa 2013: My hair grew quite fast, and I still wasn’t a fan of it. Luckily, I had my dad’s girlfriend to thank because she was a natural hair stylist, so she did my hair for about a year and a half.

Circa 2013-2014: My hair was growing, but I still was confused on what it took to take care of my hair. It was always colored, and my scalp was always lacking moisture. Never the less I continued to try, and around this time I discovered Shea moisture.

By 2015 I wanted to see how long my hair would be if it was pressed ( flat ironed) that was when it all went down hill. I let boredom get to me and after it was pressed I missed that creamy crack feel so I got a sew-in with leave out and that damaged my hair.

So I decided to start over with another big chop!

I went purple and cut all the damaged hair completely off. It was my edgiest look yet, and my confidence was put to the test. No matter what anyone thought or said I put in my own head that I was the baddest women in the world and if you couldn’t love me as is you can’t hang with me during my “normal” season.

2017 A year has passed, and by living under my wigs, I’ve allowed my sides to grow back. I’ve also been taking care of my hair daily and finding products that truly benefit my hair and its growth.

This is my natural curl pattern without being blown-out. My crown is not for everybody, but I will not be bullied for not having fine hair or criticized for not wanting my hair to be called nappy because it’s not. My hair is not bad hair because it is healthy and growing.

Please feel free to comment down below and share what you use and love for your CROWN!

XOXO

  1. Yeeeees, Gkaye. I totally feel the “newly natural” struggle. After finding those products that just make your hair melt, your life becomes that much easier.

As for texture under-representation- my hair is a bit more coily then kinky- I just remind myself of all the things that my hair can do with just water and my favorite oil and leave-in. My hairstyles are solace for my self-expression and my natural state was the best thing I’ve ever returned to!

  2. I love this post. I agree with you 100%. 4c Naturals are not represented equally, and because of this I think it gives new naturals (and maybe some that have been natural for a while) a false sense of what their hair should look like. I also think that a lot of people jumped on the natural bandwagon thinking that they had a 3c texture hiding somewhere (raises hand slowly). Finding the right products is also a struggle and I don’t feel that we are catered to as much as we should be in this department either. It’s just a constant struggle. Le sigh.

  3. Very well said, kinky hair like ours doesn’t receive the same love but it is just as beautiful! It is harder to keep healthy and hydrated (well for me it is) finding a balance has been my biggest challenge with my type 4 (or whatever type this is). Your hair is awesome and thank you for sharing your journey!
